Our friends in Udine, Italy invited us to a day-trip to some interesting spots in Slovenia. This trip was a nice way to explore Slovenia especially the very famous Postujna Caves.
In case you didn’t know, here’s some information about the famous caves from their website..
Postojna Cave is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world’s largest karst monuments. Many books and other contributions have been written about Postojna Cave; speaking of tourist guides regarding the cave itself, almost 100 have been produced over 200 years.”
Myself and a bunch of friends from base signed up for the trip. The bus pickup spot is the Udine Train Station which is about an hour away from Aviano. Since the meet-up time was 7 am, me and Jeff decided to head to Udine the night before to spend some time with our friends there.
After a fun night of eating and drinking, we woke up at around 6 am. We munched on some breakfast and headed over to the train station. It was a quick one hour ride to our first stop, the Postujna Caves. We bought our tickets for 27 Euro for both the caves and the castle. Now, we’ve seen the videos and pictures of the caves online but it was truly amazing seeing these wonders in person. The place is massive!
Before the train ride down the caves, the attendants warned us that it would be smart to rent some Jackets because of the temperature change and I’m glad we listened!
The whole tour took about two hours and it involved a lot of walking so afterwards, we headed to the park nearby for a typical Filipino picnic!
Recharged and ready to go, we headed to our next stop, the Predjama Castle. The castle is over 700 years old and is built on a 123 meter cliff for added defense. We explored the multiple rooms and dungeons the castle had to offer and even had an impromptu spelunking adventure.

One of the best things about being stationed in Italy is the proximity of our base to several countries. It’s really amazing the amount of things you can do and explore in just a day. This trip was definitely a good introduction to Slovenia and we will surely be back!
