By now, we’ve been to most of Italy but one place we haven’t visited yet was Sicily. Since we were going to Naples, we figured it was the perfect time to catch another short flight and visit Sicily. We decided on visiting Palermo and the surrounding places. Our flight came in really late from Naples and after grabbing our rental car, we found this restaurant that was still open and they did not disappoint as they served as cheap and delicious food. This was our introduction to amazing Sicilian cuisine! We then checked-in our simple apartment close to the city center.
The next day, we decided to drive one hour to the city of Corleone to visit the home of the “Godfather” and Mafia culture in Italy. We visited the Mafia Museum which shed a lot of light in how the Mafia culture started and how it hurt cities like Corleone because of all the violence that it brought. It was a very moving experience as we got to see the struggle the people had to deal with during the hay days of the Mafia.
The next day, we decided to do the Palermo StrEat Food Tour. We met up early with our guide along with 8 other people and we walked the streets of Palermo to eat some great street food. This was easily the highlight of our trip as we learned a lot and met some great people.
After our street food tour, we drove to the beach town of Cefalu to explore what it had to offer. The town was beautiful and the views were amazing. It was a shame that we only had a short time to check it out. This was one place we definitely wanted to go back to.
After having dinner by the beach, it was time to head back to Palermo to catch our flight back home. It was a fitting way to end the week as we had our first taste of Sicily.
